If you’re looking for a practical and powerful full-size SUV, then you’ll be glad to know that we have the Ford Expedition for sale here at Jim Ellis Ford. While this model has long been a great choice, it’s getting even better for the 2025 model year. There’s a new split tailgate that allows for different cargo configurations, an upgraded infotainment system with large displays, and a center console that can slide back and forth to serve both front- and second-row passengers, just to name a few features.

The 2025 model also has a simplified trim lineup that makes it easier than ever to find the right fit for your lifestyle and budget. The top-tier King Ranch and Platinum trims are carrying over, while the entry-level trims have been consolidated into the well-rounded Active trim. Finally, the Timberline trim is replaced by the Tremor, continuing to deliver off-road capability so you don’t have to limit your adventures to paved roads. In this guide, we’ll examine each of these four trims and explain what they offer so you can make an informed decision about which best suits you.

The Active

As the entry-level option, the Active trim is a great choice for families looking to get the most bang for their buck. But don’t think that means this feels like a “budget trim,” as it still comes standard with plenty of fantastic features that will elevate your time on the road.

The interior has three rows of seating, accommodating eight people. The first row has power-adjustable seats to help you get comfortable. The second row has a new 40/20/40 split for the 2025 model year, allowing you to fold the middle seat down independently if necessary to accommodate long cargo, giving you more configurations to choose from. The third row has power folding and power recline, so you can easily switch between seating and cargo space. For cargo space, you can access everything easily and have the option to split the space into two tiers thanks to the new Split Gate, which comes standard and features a power upper liftgate and a power lower tailgate.

You don’t have to upgrade to a higher trim to get a state-of-the-art infotainment system. Every Expedition comes standard with a 24-inch panoramic instrument panel display and a 13.2-inch center stack touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to connect your smartphone to this interface so you can safely stay connected while you drive.

The Active also comes standard with plenty of driver assistance features, including common ones like Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane-Keeping System, Auto High Beams, and Adaptive Cruise Control, as well as features that are often considered more premium, like front and rear parking sensors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a 360-degree camera view.

The 2025 Expedition Active comes standard with a turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that produces up to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. This engine can tow a significant amount, but the Active trim doesn’t come standard with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, which would unlock its full towing potential. This trim does come standard with helpful trailering features like Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Hitch Assist, and Trailer Sway Control.

The Platinum

Upgrading to Platinum means getting an interior that’s more comfortable for everyone, no matter where they’re sitting. The front-row seats are heated for cold days and ventilated for hot ones, and the driver’s seat has a memory function that lets you return the seat position, foot pedals, and exterior mirrors to your preferred settings at the push of a button. There’s also a heated steering wheel to keep your hands warm and a wireless charging pad so you don’t have to fumble with cables.

The second row comes standard with heated captain’s chairs, though you can swap them out for bench seating if you need the extra passenger seat. A tri-zone climate control system with rear auxiliary controls for the second and third rows lets everyone stay comfortable no matter the weather, while extra USB ports for the back seats ensure that no one has to deal with a dead battery in the middle of a road trip.

Ambient lighting makes the interior more pleasing, while leather-trimmed seats provide a premium look and feel. When you want to listen to music, you’ll get great clarity from the ten-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. A universal garage door opener lets you program built-in buttons to activate garage doors, gates, and security systems, so you don’t need to keep a variety of remotes on hand.

The Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package comes standard on this trim, so you can cart up to 9,600 lbs of cargo behind you. Items that are kept in the cabin will be easy to access thanks to the Flex Powered Console, which can slide eight inches to free up space in the center aisle or shift back for easy access from the second row. When you need to step outside, you can use the 360-degree zone lighting to navigate your surroundings at night.

The Tremor

Replacing the Timberline trim, the new Tremor is the most off-road-capable Expedition ever. It comes equipped with a high-output version of the V6 under the hood, giving it 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque to play with to deliver thrills and tackle tough trails. This trim comes standard with underbody shielding to protect vital components, 33-inch all-terrain tires that grip uneven surfaces, best-in-class ground clearance for passing smoothly over low-lying obstacles, and an electronic locking rear differential to give you extra traction when you need it.

The Tremor also has a re-tuned suspension system to keep the ride smooth and Raptor-inspired running boards to help you and your passengers get in and out of the cabin easily despite the factory lift. It also has tech features that come in handy on off-road adventures. Its seven selectable drive modes include a Rock Crawl mode that gives you the tweaks you need to get up and over boulders at low speeds.

Its standard Trail Control system is essentially a low-speed cruise control designed specifically for off-roading. In addition to letting you move forward at a set speed so you can focus on steering, the system also allows for one-pedal driving and includes Trail Turn Assist, which allows you to make sharper turns so you can get out of sticky situations. On top of its practical features, the Tremor trim also has unique styling touches inside and out, with plenty of bold orange accents.

The King Ranch

The King Ranch trim is easy to recognize by its unique southwest-inspired styling touches, which include bronze wheels, perforated leather-trimmed Del Rio leather seats with Kingsville stitching, and a grille with bronze-painted bars. Beyond style, you’ll also get an elevated experience thanks to a variety of standard luxury features, including heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row captain’s chairs, and a B&O Unlimited sound system with a whopping 22 speakers.
