If your drives involve playing referee for backseat arguments over snacks or ensuring several little ones make it to play dates all over town on time, then you know how valuable a well-designed SUV is. For busy families tasked with everyday chaos, the 2024 Ford Explorer is a terrific choice. We often work with customers looking for advanced features, and we like to show these shoppers the Limited and Platinum trims. The 2024 Explorer is available in a total of eight trims, but we feel these two particular ones have a focus on everyday conveniences.

The Limited has excellent features for shoppers in the under $50,000 price range.[a] For those willing to pay a bit extra, the Platinum offers a few extras that make daily family life especially seamless (at least in the vehicle; we can’t help what happens at baseball practice or the swim meet). Below, we will go over the features of each model that are especially useful for busy families managing every sort of sports practice, errand, school fair, road trip, and more.

The Limited

First-Row Center Floor Console

The Limited is a solid choice for families who tackle busy days and need a vehicle that can keep up while keeping kids happy. One convenient feature in this model is the first-row center floor console with the armrest and storage bin. Busy parents know you need all sorts of odds and ends nearby to make it through the day. You need those snacks you can toss to the backseat when those hunger tantrums strike. You need tissues for spills and wipes for hands that got mysteriously sticky. And those are just the things for your kids. You need your sunglasses, phone, snacks, and other essentials. This multi-purpose console makes storing these things right where you need them easy while still providing that nice armrest.

Second-Row Sunblinds

Is there anything better for a parent than when little ones take naps in the car? You enjoy a few moments of peace to collect your thoughts and maybe even finally hear that last riveting chapter of your audiobook. Meanwhile, your kids arrive at your destination rested and refreshed (instead of tired and cranky). The second-row sun blinds are essential to rear-seat naps. They’ll block out the harsh sun rays keeping little ones awake.

Voice-Activated Navigation

Between softball practice, piano recitals, play dates, and science fairs, there are a lot of destinations you need to find for your family every day, so you’re constantly looking up addresses. Typing these into a navigation system is not only a hassle but can also be unsafe when driving. That’s why we love the voice-activated navigation system in this model. Just tell it where you want to go, and it will pull up directions for you. So you can keep wiping up that spill or buckling in that finicky kid.

Wireless Charging Pad

Busy parents know that you can’t bring USB cords around children if you ever want to see them again. Little ones think they’re toys, and teens steal them for their own devices. Luckily, you don’t need cords in the Limited because it has a wireless charging pad. Leave the cords at home, and keep your devices charged so you can always call the field trip chaperone to tell them you’re running a few minutes late.

The Platinum

Universal Garage Door Opener and PowerFold Third-Row Seats

The Platinum trim builds on the Limited with a few added features that make it with the price jump. One of these is the standard Universal Garage Door Opener. With this built into the vehicle, you don’t need to worry about kids misplacing it. And you don’t have to go through the hassle of programming an opener to your garage. You have enough on your hands when you get home. The Platinum has one of the most talked about features of the Explorer, the PowerFold third-row seats. When you need more cargo space, these seats let you put down the third row with a push of a button, extending the trunk space into the third row.

Dual Second-Row Smart-Charging USB Ports

Today kids and teens expect to be able to use devices at all times, including in the vehicle, so we like showing off the Dual Smart-Charging USB ports. These smart ports can detect the perfect amount of current needed to charge devices. And since there are two, those rear seat passengers in the two captain’s chairs don’t need to take turns using a port.

12V Powerpoints

Need to plug in things like laptops or mini fridges? You’ll also find three 12V powerpoints in the Platinum trim—two in the first row and one in the cargo area. So whether your passengers need to plug in devices to get homework done or your family wants to plug in a hotplate for camping adventures, the Explorer Platinum is ready to power your days.

B&O Sound System With 12 Speakers

Audio media can make busy family days on the road go by a little easier and be even more fun. You can play audiobooks, from entertaining to educational, for the family to enjoy together. You can put on that favorite family playlist to get pumped for road trips. Or, you can put on a kid-friendly podcast. In the Platinum, you’ll listen to these files on the 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system. It delivers a surround sound listening experience to every passenger, so nobody can complain that they can’t hear the media.

A Twin-Panel Moonroof

When you want kids to put the screens away and marvel at nature instead, they can look out the available twin-panel moonroof. It’s a great feature to have if you’re an adventurous family, always off to a new and beautiful destination. With sprawling views of the outdoors, your kids might just be willing to stop scrolling on Instagram for a few minutes.
