The 3.3L Ti-VCT V6

The standard engine for the 2023 Ford F-150 is a 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 that delivers 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. One of the great things about the current F-150 is that it—and all other available engines—comes paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission with optimal gear spacing and three overdrive gears, plus Selectable Drive Modes for even more functionality. This combination of features ensures the F-150 delivers a fantastic driving experience; the fact that you get it with every engine demonstrates how much Ford cares about giving each driver a great truck. With this engine, the F-150 can handle up to 8,200 lbs of maximum towing and get up to 1,955 lbs of maximum available payload capacity. How you configure your truck has a big impact on these ratings—this is something you'll see with each of the engines available. For example, a Regular Cab model with this engine and a 3.55 axle ratio will only have up to 5,000 lbs of maximum towing; a model with an axle ratio of 3.73 is needed to achieve optimal towing power.

The 2.7L EcoBoost Turbo V6

This is the first of several available engines; while the starting XL and XLT trims come with the standard engine, the Lariat models feature this one. With the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine, you get 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, which gives you much greater power than the standard engine, thanks to EcoBoost engineering. That power comes with increased capability as models with this engine can get up to 10,100 lbs of maximum towing capacity and up to 2,465 lbs of maximum payload. The configuration you choose—including cab size, drivetrain, and axle ratio—is very important, but every model with this engine can handle at least 7,600 lbs of towing, giving you great power and performance with any setup.

The 3.5L EcoBoost Turbo V6

Next up, we have what appears to be a somewhat unassuming engine at first glance—particularly when you see it in a list like this—but it's actually the best option for pure strength with the Ford F-150. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine is available for numerous trims and delivers 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, which won't be the highest numbers for either of those. And yet, when properly configured with a SuperCab or SuperCrew and a 4x2 configuration, plus the available Max Trailer Tow Package, it becomes the most robust option, and you get an F-150 that can handle up to 14,000 lbs of maximum towing and 3,315 lbs of maximum payload. Greater horsepower and torque can be found elsewhere, but nothing else can get more work done.

The 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid Turbo V6

This is a hybrid version of the engine we just looked at, which comes standard on the F-150 Limited trim, although it is available for other models. The Full Hybrid version of this engine delivers 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most powerful options available for the F-150; this is the highest power and torque without looking at the two Raptor models (more on them in a moment). Despite this raw power, an F-150 with this engine can handle 12,700 lbs of maximum towing and up to 2,120 lbs of payload. This is certainly impressive but not the top dog if capability is your primary concern when shopping for a truck.

The 5.0L Ti-VCT "Coyote" V8

Here we have the sole V8 engine available for most F-150 models, which comes standard on the King Ranch and Platinum trims. The 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine delivers 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, which is quite impressive, and it can handle up to 13,000 lbs of towing and 3,235 lbs of maximum payload. You can see that this is the second-highest set of numbers we've seen for capability, and that will remain the case even after looking at the final two options. If you don't quite need the maximums from the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine and you prefer the feel of a V8, then this is the perfect choice.

The 3.5L EcoBoost H.O. V6

Next up, we have the first of two options that are restricted to a particular model rather than being available on several different trims like the engines we've looked at so far. This 3.5L EcoBoost High Output V6 engine delivers an impressive 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, and it's only available on the F-150 Raptor. The Raptor is designed with incredible performance in mind—particularly for going off-road, which is where all that torque can really come in handy. Despite this power, since it's designed first and foremost for the trail, you'll only get 8,200 lbs of maximum towing and 1,445 lbs of payload capacity with this engine.

The 5.2L Supercharged V8

Finally, we have the most powerful engine available for the F-150 by a huge margin—at least in terms of raw power rather than capabilities. This 5.2L Supercharged V8 engine is only offered for the incredible F-150 Raptor R model, which has been engineered for speed and incredible overall performance. This beast delivers a staggering 700 hp and 640 lb-ft of torque. Much like the other Raptor, it prioritizes performance over capability, so this engine can "only" handle up to 8,700 lbs of towing and 1,400 lbs of maximum payload. But if a heart-pounding driving experience is what you're looking for, both on the pavement and the trail, then the Raptor R is in a class all its own.
