The F-Series has boasted exemplary trucks since its conception in 1948, especially after the F-150s release in 1973. The 2023 Ford F-150 is something really special and touts a litany of impressive features and specs that further solidifies the model as among the best vehicles ever made, but how did we get here? The F-Series has come a long, long way, and its history has been marked by key points of innovation and feats of engineering from the minds at Ford, all of which have led to this year’s F-150, the pinnacle of it all, and easily one of the finest trucks ever made. The F-150 has an interesting story that spans 74 years and counting, so let’s take a walk down memory lane.
The Beginning of the F-Series
Did you know that Ford Motors was one of the primary producers of military vehicles during World War II? Being one of the pioneers of the automotive industry, Ford was a trusted proprietor of vehicles that offered bold strength, power, and resilience, exactly what the world needed at the time. As the war was ending and society was trying to make its way through a new world, Ford knew they had to make trucks that helped with that endeavor. Thus, the F-Series debuted in late 1948.
Ford saw the utility heavy-duty trucks could offer civilians, and so it created its first line of post-war trucks. The F-Series initially sold in five different designs: pickup truck, panel truck, COE, conventional truck, and school bus chassis, making for a line of versatile trucks that aided in any endeavor during this hard-earned peacetime. From the start, the F-Series was at the forefront of technological innovation, as each model came equipped with windshield wipers and even a windshield washer that utilized a foot-plunger pumping system. This may seem to be the norm these days, but back then, this was quite new technology and offered unparalleled convenience. From the F-Series conception, Ford was paving the way for post-war cars that placed high importance on performance, versatility, and innovation.
1953-1961
In the years to come, the F-Series continued to improve upon its performance, convenience, and comfort. In its second and third generations, F-Series trucks featured wrap-around windshields for the best possible sightlines and a panoramic rear window, so drivers could always see their surroundings. The design continued to be streamlined and restyled, so each following interaction of an F-Series truck, whether it be the F-100 or F-250, looked smooth, hip, and inviting. Fascinatingly enough, the F-Series was also one of the earliest truck lines to offer the option of seatbelts. Though it is certainly nerve-wracking to think of making seat belts optional these days, this was a different time, and though safety measures such as seatbelts weren’t nearly as common in those days, Ford was at the forefront of making such safety precautions available.
The fourth generation, which was released in 1961, underwent a total redesign. New, more powerful engines improved performance and speed, and they featured a new, sleek look that was distinct for that generation. The fourth generation marked the first Ford trucks to feature the Twin I-Beam suspension system, which made the F-Series the most maneuverable trucks available up until that point. Throughout the mid-to-late 1900s, F-Series trucks proved to be the leading trucks for a new era.
The Birth of the F-150
As the F-Series cruised into the ’70s, under-the-hood improvements followed, which continued to improve the exceedingly powerful strength and performance that had become customary for Ford trucks. Up until this point, the F-Series featured two notable size classes: the F-100 and the F-250. By the time the early ’70s came around, Ford wanted to side-step issues it was having with emission control, so it introduced a middle ground between the F-100 and the F-250. The Ford F-150 was a perfect median point between the lighter F-100 and the heftier F-250.
The F-150 offered the perfect balance between the previous two weight classes, offering the best of both worlds when it came to power and handling. But things didn’t just change under the hood. Key changes to the bodies of F-Series vehicles could be seen at this time, such as the shift from round headlights to square ones, a distinct feature of the decade. Cosmetically and internally, the F-Series continued to rapidly modernize, and the advent of the F-150 marked a definitive step in this, as the F-150 would go on to become the best-selling truck ever.
Innovations Between 1980 and 1997
In 1980, the F-150 underwent its first major redesign, the first redesign in twenty years for the other F-Series trucks. The seventh generation F-Series vehicle touted the smallest engine these trucks had ever utilized and offered the best fuel efficiency yet. As a matter of fact, fuel efficiency became one of Ford’s top priorities at this time, and the F-Series, especially the F-150, steadily improved efficiency throughout the ’80s and early ’90s, as well as its performance.
In 1997 specifically, a notable event took place. This year marked the 75th anniversary of the first Ford truck produced all the way back in 1917. Even in the ’90s, Ford was already just 25 years shy of producing trucks for a hundred years! Especially considering that the actual hundred-year anniversary of Ford vehicle production was just six years away, Ford wanted to do something to commemorate this milestone for their production of trucks specifically. For the 75th anniversary, all F-Series vehicles featured special cosmetics, such as special emblems on the grille and bumper of the cars, to celebrate 75 years of performance and innovation.
F-150 in the New Millennium
The 2000s marked substantial changes to the F-150 on all fronts. For starters, the exterior of the vehicle went through a major overhaul to parallel the changing millennium, now sporting a more rounded look that appeared, at the time, smoother and more futuristic. New 4.2 and 4.6 liter V6 engines packed the most powerful punch for the F-150 yet, putting it in a class of its own when compared to other trucks. Independent front suspension marked the end of the Twin I-Beam system and improved the vehicle’s handling and maneuverability by a large margin.
Continuing into the late 2000s, the F-150 slowly began to embrace a close relationship with the ever-booming technology of the time. Not only was the F-150 the most trusted and stylish truck at this time, but this era also marked the beginning of the truck’s close work with technological factors such as electric power steering and the computer-programmable body control module, which made maintenance easier and more streamlined than ever.
Further still, the 2010s marked an even greater technological renaissance for the F-150. Being the genesis of technology utilized for comfort, entertainment, and convenience, the twelfth-generation F-150 began sporting backup cameras, high-end infotainment systems that allowed people to control their entertainment and information directly from their phones, and even various safety features, such as warning sensors that indicated obstructions in front and behind the vehicle. As the F-150’s relationship with technology became closer and closer, quality of life and safety within the vehicle improved, and this time, seatbelts were mandatory!
